In today’s world, political anxiety can feel overwhelming. As a Christian integrative therapist, I understand that political turbulence and divisive rhetoric can contribute to heightened stress and emotional strain. Here, I offer some practical tools to help you manage political anxiety and find peace amidst the chaos.
1. Ground Yourself in the Present
Political anxiety often arises from worrying about future uncertainties or feeling overwhelmed by the current state of affairs. Grounding techniques can help center your mind and bring you back to the present moment. Practice mindfulness through deep breathing exercises, meditation, or simply focusing on your immediate surroundings.
2. Limit Exposure to News and Social Media
While staying informed is important, constant exposure to news and social media can exacerbate anxiety. Set boundaries for how much time you spend consuming news and social media content. Designate specific times during the day to catch up on current events and avoid checking your devices right before bed.
3. Engage in Self-Care Practices
Self-care is essential for managing anxiety. Incorporate activities that nurture your well-being, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep. Additionally, find hobbies and activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s gardening, hiking, or engaging in creative pursuits.
4. Seek Support from Your Community
You don’t have to navigate political anxiety alone. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups to share your feelings and seek advice. Connecting with others who understand your concerns can provide comfort and reassurance.
5. Reflect on Your Values and Faith
As a Christian, grounding yourself in your faith can provide solace during turbulent times. Reflect on Bible verses that offer comfort and strength. For instance, consider:
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
6. Engage in Prayer
Prayer can be a powerful tool for managing anxiety. Take time each day to pray for peace, guidance, and strength. You may also find comfort in praying for others who are struggling with similar feelings.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, in these uncertain times, we seek Your peace and guidance. Help us to cast our anxieties upon You and trust in Your plan. Grant us the strength to face challenges with courage and grace. May we find comfort in Your presence and support in our communities. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
A Poem for Reflection
Where Is Her Torch?
Politicians have become magicians in the land of the free.
While a statue too big to come down goes by Lady Liberty.
Where is your torch that is supposed to light the way?
Is it drowning in the tears of shame?
Swirling into an abyss of politics.
Floating far away.
While we suffocate each other six feet apart at the magic show, created by the news.
Making sure each one is heard on social platforms, our important point of view.
Democrat or Republican.
Do you really think Trump or Biden?
No man will save us but the Prince of Peace.
2020 the year where 4th of July will cease.
Vote red.
Vote blue.
It won’t save you!
As we swim alongside her torch of enlightenment.
Praying that we don’t drown!!
